The WISE properties of complete samples of radio-loud AGN
We present an analysis of four complete samples of radio-loud AGN (3CRR, 2Jy, 6CE and 7CE) using nearand mid-IR data taken by the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). The combined sample consists of 79 quasars and 273 radio galaxies, and covers a redshift range 0.003 < z < 3.395. The dichotomy in the mid-IR properties of lowand highexcitation radio galaxies (LERGs HERGs) is analysed for ...
متن کاملStarbursts and torus evolution in AGN
Recent VLT SINFONI observations of the close environments (∼ 30 pc) of nearby AGNs have shown that thick gas tori and starbursts with ages between 10 and 150 Myr are frequently found. By applying these observations to a previously established analytical model of clumpy accretion disks, we suggest an evolutionary sequence for starburst and AGN phases. Whereas the observed properties of the gas t...
متن کاملUnification Issues and the AGN Torus
Observations give strong support for the unification scheme of active galactic nuclei. Clumpiness of the toroidal obscuration is crucial for explaining the IR observations and has significance consequences for AGN classification: type 1 and type 2 viewing is an angle-dependent probability, not an absolute property. The broad line region (BLR) and the dusty torus are, respectively, the inner and...
متن کاملX - Ray Observations of WISE - Selected AGN
We report on a NuSTAR and XMM-Newton program that has observed a sample of three extremely luminous, heavily obscured WISE-selected AGN at z ∼ 2 in a broad X-ray band (0.1 − 79 keV). The parent sample, selected to be faint or undetected in the WISE 3.4μm (W1) and 4.6μm (W2) bands but bright at 12μm (W3) and 22μm (W4), are extremely rare, with only ∼ 1000 so-called “W1W2-dropouts” across the ext...
متن کاملThe AGN-obscuring Torus: The End of the "Doughnut" Paradigm?
Unified schemes of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) require an obscuring dusty torus around the central engine. The compact sizes (only a few parsecs) determined in recent high-resolution observations require that the obscuring matter be clumpy and located inside the region where the black hole gravity dominates over the galactic bulge. This location is in line with the scenario depicting the toru...
